Before grime exploded across the UK and dubstep shook the world, one producer was already fusing their energy into a new, untamed sound. That producer was Emwhy Ello, one half of the dynamic duo Twin Frequency, and the sound he created back in 2004 was called Grimestep — a fierce, bass-driven hybrid that combined the raw lyricism of grime with the dark weight of dubstep.

Fast forward two decades, and Grimestep is finally stepping into the spotlight it deserves. Together with his Twin Frequency partner Benjii Cee, Emwhy Ello is bringing the sound he pioneered to a new generation, working alongside Marcel, a powerhouse grime MC, to create a 12-track Grimestep album titled Originators — a fitting tribute to the genre’s true beginnings.

The project will be released on AudioWave Records across all major DSPs and as a limited edition vinyl, with only 100 copies available worldwide.

The Birth of Grimestep: 2004 and Beyond

Long before grime and dubstep became household names, Emwhy Ello was experimenting with the fusion of their sounds. In 2004, he began producing early Grimestep instrumentals — dark, minimal, and bass-heavy compositions that carried grime’s aggression and dubstep’s subsonic power.

“Back then, people didn’t really know what to call it,” says Emwhy Ello.“It had grime’s tempo and attitude, but the basslines hit like dubstep. It was underground, raw, and ahead of its time. That’s when Grimestep was born — before the world even realised it needed it.”

Now, nearly twenty years later, the sound is being reborn — refined, redefined, and reignited through Twin Frequency’s modern production and Marcel’s razor-sharp lyricism.

‘Originators’ — A 12-Track Monument to Grimestep

The upcoming album Originators is more than just a release; it’s a cultural statement. It celebrates where Grimestep came from, how it evolved, and where it’s headed next.

With 12 explosive tracks, the album blends grime’s lyrical storytelling with dubstep’s cinematic intensity — weaving together energy, darkness, and emotion into something unmistakably fresh yet historically rooted.

“This album is our way of setting the record straight,” says Twin Frequency.“Grimestep started with us, and now we’re giving it the platform it always deserved. Working with Marcel has been incredible — he embodies the raw energy and honesty that this sound is built on.”

‘Massacre’ — The First Official Grimestep Teaser

Fans won’t have to wait long to experience the rebirth of Grimestep. The first teaser single, ‘Massacre’, drops in just two weeks, alongside a cinematic music video that perfectly captures the essence of the genre.

Produced by Twin Frequency and featuring Marcel, the track delivers a Halloween-inspired Grimestep instrumental layered with hard-hitting bars that cut straight through the mix. It’s dark, menacing, and full of the raw intensity that defines the sound.

“Massacre is the spark that reignites the fire,” says Marcel.“It’s heavy, unapologetic, and it shows the world exactly what Grimestep is — grime’s attitude with dubstep’s energy. The result is chaos in the best possible way.”

Two Decades in the Making

For Emwhy Ello, Grimestep isn’t a trend — it’s legacy. What began in a home studio in 2004 has now evolved into a full-fledged movement backed by AudioWave Records, complete with cutting-edge production, a visionary artist roster, and the same underground spirit that defined its birth.

“We’re not following what’s hot — we’re reminding the world where this came from,” says Twin Frequency.“Grimestep is the bridge between eras — born from grime, raised by dubstep, and ready to define the next wave of UK sound.”

A Limited Vinyl for the True Heads

To mark the historic release, only 100 limited-edition vinyl copies of Originators will be made available worldwide — each one a collector’s item representing the rebirth of a movement that began more than two decades ago.
